It was checkout day from the Masai Maara camp. Knew it was going to be a long drive, alteast 7-8 hrs before we get to Nairobi. This time we had a breakfast at the camp before we headed out ~ 8 am. Wonderful coffee as always. Started our drive, nothing much along the way. Did a pit stop for a bathroom break, always touristy spots to lure you into more shopping. I was given good advice to hold off and purchase at the markets in Nairobi. These are spoilt by other tourists.
We stopped at Artcaffe for lunch. Our 3rd time at this coffee shop chain. After our long lunch, reminder that service cannot be willed to be any faster π. Continued our drive and hit a tense traffic situation near a narrow road next to a deep valley. We felt almost sure one of the vehicles was going to go down the valley due to the general impatience all around. In hindsight itβs funny thinking of my dad and uncle encouraging our driver to speed along the side of the road π at that time though I felt they needed to lay off and let him drive.
Got to Nairobi finally, hit traffic in a Nairobi too. Got home by ~ 5 pm. We had dinner plans with Vatsan uncle, Shruthi and Shalini, they had picked an upscale Ethiopian place. Was good food, injeras and the sides.
Next day was rest day for everyone. I had my flight back to SF that night. Flights was at 1 am and we planned to leave ~ 10 pm. I wanted to do one more trip to the Masai market at whichever mall it would be at that day. Just mom and me headed out ~ 10:30 am. Kiddos were happy to be home with Thatha and Arun uncle headed to a golf course. I had already run two loads of laundry the previous evening and put it out to dry.
Mom and I got more local currency for USD at our apartment front desk. Had to decline a couple Uber drivers who were asking for higher fares than what was quoted in the app. Our apartment front desk advised the same. Shalini did say that people werenβt happy about the economy and they were recovering from insane inflation. Anyway, headed straight to the market. I knew exactly what I wanted. It was still early and many folks werenβt there. Even with that, one person will cover for another and do their trades for each other. I was satisfied with all my shopping. I did feel like I had to stop my mom and pull her out as she went over her budget and was now in direct USD transactions π€¦πΎββοΈ
We then looked for a place to eat. Went to a nice looking place and ordered a veg sandwich and fish curry with rice. This place had very little foot traffic. 45 mins later we were still waiting for our food. Letβs say my impatient American self came out when someone checked on how we were doing. Our waiter looked visibly stressed every time I signaled to him to check on our food and would acknowledge but not come to our table. Totally lost my appetite. The veg sandwich when it did arrive was a mess. Anyway, we took an Uber back to our apartment.
Before I realized what I had got myself into
We had planned for to-go at this place for dad and kiddos but decided against it with the slow service. I got to the apartment and ordered in food. Neither kids or dad were very hungry surprisingly. I tried to order over phone but even with t-mobile at 1 gb in Kenya, I couldnβt get through for the payment part until I got Wi-Fi at the apartment.
At the apartment I got busy with the packing. Got my shopping stuff in, kids stuff all packed. Throughout our trip the Olympics was constantly on whenever we were in the Nairobi apartment. By evening I was pretty much done and ready. Vatsan uncle, Shruthi and Shalini stopped by again, with gifts for kiddos β€οΈ we told them about our restaurant experience and they confirmed it wasnβt surprising as that mall gets very little foot traffic. And that was it. A wrap on our Kenya trip.
Our driver got us to the airport as scheduled. At one point we had to offboard and walk across a gate and then get back into the jeep, strange. Flight was ok. Had a longer layover in Doha. Flight back to SF was long and then immigration too π€¦πΎββοΈ so much of this could be automated, why hasnβt this been solved yet. And then SF traffic to get home, joy π phew, finally home sweet home at 5 pm. I had work starting at 8 am the next day.
Headed out before sunrise, everything packed and loaded I.e. our breakfast and lunch. In hindsight, this was one of the best games drives for me. Also loved how the food was packed, everybody had their own box and labeled.
We realized that hot air balloon rides are quite popular here. As we started driving through the park, we saw so many. From what we saw, people do the balloon ride, land someplace when a safari driver picks them up and they continue the game drive. Pretty cool. Iβm glad we didnβt do that as Iβm sure we would have had to wake up even earlier. We got wonderful photos on the balloons and sunrise π as soon as we entered we saw thousands for wildebeest. Thatβs what this park is known for, to see millions of wildebeest in their migration path. The sights were pretty awesome.
We saw a pack of hyenas early on and watched as they ran along our jeep. Next we saw a lioness having her breakfast of wildebeest. Some pics will show you how close to the wild animals we get. I was nervous and then noticed people filming or watching from open jeeps, no option to close if the lioness changes her mind. Rithvi was a bit grossed out watching the lion π€·ββοΈ
Hyena in the backdrop of wildebeest and hot air balloons See how close the jeeps are? Lioness and her breakfast
Throughout many of our game drives we noticed that the drivers are tuned into stations or walkie talkies to hear where there are animal sightings. Itβs all in Swahili. We then came to a place wondering what we were going to see here. It was a bit strange but all worked out. Our driver told us there is some animal in a restricted area of the park, pointed us to a jeep with rangers. He mentioned we may have to pay a bribe, and quickly go in and out of the restricted area. There are heavy US $ fines and prison time for violating park rules. The adults quickly decided we were ok with the bribe and handed 1k shillings. The kids were not happy to which Arun uncle said that such transaction should happen without kids knowing π. We agreed with the kids and said it wonβt happen again. There were 2-3 jeeps just waiting near the rangers jeep. Then the rangers drove away which was our signal to quickly get in and get out. Itβs debatable if this was worth it but we got to see a mamma leopard and her two cubs π Rithvi forgot all about the bribe and was ready to take the cubs home. It was sooo cute but we got back into the unrestricted area quickly.
Leopard cubs
After that we drive to a spot where there 5-6 cheetahs. This one was amazing too, so close to the animals. One walked almost up to our jeep before walking alongside it π I absolutely loved this.
Cheetah walking to us
After this sighting we drove to a spot where there was a massive herd of wildebeest near a river. Typically they wait long times, one nudging the other to go first before it becomes a stampede situation. Our driver had told us to be patient, this could take a while. While there wasnβt any movement yet, we drove a little away to have our picnic breakfast. Set a mat on the ground and had our breakfast. Pretty cool and well organized.
After breakfast we headed back to the spot with wildebeest. This was a decent amount of time, maybe couple of hours almost. This is why you need a lot of snacks π we finally decided to drive away. We got to a spot near the Kenya-Tanzanian border where we saw herds of wildebeest and zebras running across. Was pretty cool.
While we waited for the river crossing
After this we headed for our picnic lunch. We could do a nature walk with a ranger here and tip them. The walk wasnβt much, walked along the river and saw hippos. We then settled down for picnic lunch. Lots of baboons around, which you had to watch out for in case they came for your food. At one point, Tanush and Rithvi jumped out of picnic mat before I even realized what happened. The baboon was 10 feet away!
Nature walk Hippos at the back
After this it was heading back to camp. Our driver had heard of a lion nearby and drove around a bit but we couldnβt spot it. We got back to camp. I felt pretty good about our last game drive of our trip. I was honestly ready to be back on paved roads.
At camp, we rested and the rest of the evening was relaxing, caught up with family over video, backed up of our pics and videos. Dinner was good and our drive back to Nairobi was going to be another long drive. Had a restful night. Showers and amenities in both Malu lodge and the Masai Maara camp were good.
Headed out as planned in the morning. breakfast of omelets, toast etc. was loaded into our jeep. Hit the road to Masai Mara. Passed a valley, which is a popular lookout point but decided not to stop and continued driving. Drive was largely uneventful and long. We stopped for breakfast at a touristy place aka market with refreshments attached. We got some chai, crepes aside from our packed breakfast, some samosas too.
Breakfast on the way to Masai Maara Earring from my market shopping
We got to Masai Mara and it was a dditonal drive into the park to find our camp. We got confused a couple times on where to go to reach the camp, our driver had to course correct a couple times. He wasnβt very familiar with this place too. This place was amazing as well! A lot like Amboseli, very integrated with its surroundings. The main area with dining was really nice. As soon as we got her we saw some hippos in the river across. Relatively close by to the camp. I was exhausted from the drive. We got our lunch and our driver asked if we wanted to go for a game drive at 4 pm. Rithvi and I opted out. I was beat. The 3 seniors with Tanush were βyes! Letβs go!β – impressive.
Masai Maara Main AreaChilling in the tent
I couldnβt be happier to relax in our luxury tent. It was so well done! Rithvi as usual settled down with some downloaded movies on my iPad, thatβs what she had done at Malu Lodge too. No internet connectivity in the tents, only in the main area. I settled down for a nap again π we had seen some wart hogs across the river from our tent. Later during my nap, I heard some animal sounds which I groggily told myself could be warthogs or a lion! π€ͺ
Our tent
It rained a bit here as well but for not as long. The guidance here was that you could walk by yourself between your tent and main area during daytime. Very early in the morning or late evening needs someone from camp to escort us. Rithvi and I freshened up and headed to the main area for Wi-Fi and dinner. I lounged on the couches while I backed up my photos. The camp folks started a campfire that Rithvi and I could sit near and also provided for you with salted peanuts and popcorn β€οΈ
Sunset
The rest of the group joined us after their game drive. They had a good one and saw a cheetah. We settled in for dinner when I heard the same animal sounds during my nap. Tanush confidently stated that it was lion. It sounded fairly close by and all of the main area is completely open, no concept of doors. I asked him to confirm and camp folks said yes it was but didnβt want us to step outside to find it until they did. While we continued with our dinner, one of them told us to quickly come over as they could see it now. It was a dark and the lion was right across the river, maybe 100 feet away! It was a large lion! As soon as the torch light was put on, it was figuring out where to run. It thankfully ran away from the river. That was exciting for the night!
I was nervous about the night but it was fairly quiet, no more sounds that I heard at-least. Early start tomorrow for a full day game drive in Masai Maara. Both breakfast and lunch were going to be packed,
We started our day early as usual. The first stop was lake Naivasha with a 1 night stay at Malu Lodge. This would be followed by a 2 night stay at Masai Mara and head back to Nairobi.
We had some light leftovers in the morning as well as packed them for our drive. It would be 2-3 hrs to get to lake Naivasha. Some of us ate enough so we could skip breakfast at Lake Naivasha. When we got there half the group chose a breakfast buffet, seemed like a nice but expensive place. After breakfast, we headed for the boat ride. To future travelers, I would say this pit stop could be skipped. It was a nice lake, definitely popular with locals but the main point about it was that it was where βout of Africaβ was filmed and I havenβt even heard of this movie. I saw a poster and I donβt think I want to watch it either. The movie makers had a number of wild animals brought to an island on this lake for the filming. After the movie shooting, they just left the animals there and they roam around freely. It had all the animals you would see at a national park I.e, impala, gazelle, ostrich, giraffes, wildebeest, baboon etc. I wasnβt impressed about seeing something created artificially but the lake is natural. I was meh honestly but ok. Rithvi had a good time, she said the lake was clear and not smelly (our recent experience in Cali was less than ideal, too much algae due to high heat).
After this we headed to check in to Malu lodge. Now, when we got to the lodge, it was beautiful! Large open meadow and very English style cottages, that make you feel like youβve been transported to 1930βs. However the drive to get there was nuts. I get driving on dirt roads but this was on an incline for almost a couple hours. Given that, I would say this stop could be skipped too. Itβs unfortunate that such a nice place is so poorly accessible. It didnβt really feel worth it, and that too for just one night. I was exhausted from the drive. Our driver also mentioned that many of the estates/resorts are owned by English/white folks who have also cut down a lot of tress and driven away the elephants that used to live here. So overall, I felt all the more like this stop could have been skipped.
Anyway, reaching the destination was a relief. The kids, especially Rithvi ran in the meadow and they also had a swing that she totally enjoyed. The view at the top was also picturesque but knowing the truth also made me feel salty. The staff were all very nice locals, we had a nice outdoor lunch. A naturalist said he could take us on a nature walk at 4 pm. We had ~1 hr to rest in our cottage. The cottage was really cozy and nice too.
360 of Malu Lodge
I thought Iβd take a nap before the nature walk. When I woke up ~4 pm it was raining heavily, it truly did feel like we were in England, I was sort of relieved and went back to sleep. That drive was something. I woke up ~ 6 pm when then rain had stopped and freshened up for dinner, the naturalist had told us that if it rained we canβt do the walk. We had thought we could walk from the cottage to dining hall but given the rains and mud puddles everywhere decided to have our driver take us there.
Our cottage
Dinner was inside, it was cozy, service was Kenyan speed. Food was good. We shared the space with 3 other families with their very young children. I told myself they must be from nearby if they are traveling with such young kiddos and choosing to stay here π
Headed back to our cottages after dinner and hit the bed. There is no internet connectivity in the cottages so not much I could do staying up either. We were going to head out ~ 7 am to Masai Mara and requested our lodge to pack breakfast for one the way.
Our driver was supposed come between 6:30 and 7 am to take us to Amboseli National Park. He came in just a few mins before 7 am. I was impressed that our group was ready by 6:30 am and waiting downstairs. Headed out after loading up our bags packed for the next 3 days. Our Nairobi apartment was kind enough to hold the rest of our bags when we would come back. We had technically checked out of the apartment.
We asked our driver about breakfast and I donβt know if he hadnβt expected it. We stopped at a very ok western food kinda place 1 hr into our drive. Ok food – American style pastries etc. and then there was a chai too – it was ok. From there we continued our drive. The country side is a lot like rural India, shacks, huts and children waving at us π surprise, lo and behold, we passed giraffes and zebras grazing on the side of the road! You donβt have to go to a national park to see these animals!!
We reached amboseli at ~ 2 pm. Perfect timing for lunch. Absolutely loved elephant gorge camp, our stay for the next couple days. So beautifully done! Integrates so well with nature. While our host was walking us through property rules, I spot an elephant on the property! Later I saw a whole herd of them, sipping water not more than 50 feet from the dining area of the camp. Donβt remember what we got for lunch, I was the designated accent translator for the seniors in my group π the rule on this property was that you could never walk by yourself from main hall/dining to your room. You always needed someone from the camp to escort you as wild animals roam freely and anything unexpected could happen.
After lunch, we headed to our rooms. 3 separate rooms for the 6 of us, rithvi with me, Tanush with his grandma and the two septuagenarian friends together. I absolutely loved the room! So beautiful!

We choose to head out for a game drive at 4 pm, after resting for a bit. The camp was fairly close to the park, 30 mins. The drive was dusty for sure, I wore a mask but that didnβt quite help. Amboseli is known the herds of elephants, they migrate from Tanzania this time of the year and we saw a lot! We were lucky and got to see them close up when they crossing the road. We saw other animals too, usual giraffe, zebra, wildebeest. The star feature was seeing a pride off lionesses – 7 or 8 of them sitting together. A lot of people got wind of where they were and there were at least 50 other jeeps/vans around us with many of them holding lenses thrice the circumference of my hand while we clicked pics with our iPhones π
Entering Amboseli Pride of lioness but not very clear video
It was a fun drive and we headed back to the camp. Rested in our rooms for a bit before getting back to dining hall. You summon someone to walk you by ringing a bell outside your room. They were always very prompt. Dinner was good. I appreciated them accommodating and making chicken strips for Rithvi, very American style. The speed of bringing food is not American though, takes 2-3 times longer. This wasnβt only at the camp, everywhere including Nairobi. Good day and got the bed for a 5 am start the next day. Had shared our orders for breakfast which was going to be packed and loaded into the jeep tomorrow morning.
The plan for the day was visiting Nairobi national park, tickets purchased via the ecitizen portal, the elephant orphanage within the park (I had to make this advanced booking more than a month earlier) and the giraffe park. The sheldrick elephant orphanage requires a confirmation that you have been confirmed to enter. You get to pet baby elephants that were orphaned through any number of man made causes – civil strifes, poaching etc. the giraffe park is where you feed giraffes and this is located outside the park.
Started our day at 7 am. Took roughly 30 mins to get to Nairobi national park. The first few animals you see on your safari is always so exciting. We started with some birds, then a turkey and very early on saw some black rhinos, this is rare. As we drove along, we spotted imphala, gazelle, giraffes, zebra and some wildebeest. We then spotted a lioness, our driver drew a hyena out using some audio. For a minute we thought it was going to run towards us. The highlight was a white rhino mommy and her baby. The baby rhino was so playful, jumping around β€οΈ we also spotted warthogs, hippos and a summer cat (?). We almost thought it was a cheetah.
Summer cat?
Very productive game drive and it was still 10:30 am. We had our time slot at the sheldrick elephant orphanage so headed over. For advanced bookings and getting a confirmed slot, I thought we would be sharing the slot with a few people to visit the elephants. There were over a 100 people at least! Silly me, thinking Iβll get some good 1-on-1 time π
We first met Raha, a baby rhino who had a pretty traumatic start to her life. Mom killed and she was badly injured by hyenas. She was rescued and nursed back to health. We then met herds of baby elephants, omg they are so cute. They come running and attach themselves to a giant bottle of milk, not very different from human babies π there was a narrator who talked about what happened to each of them and how they are raised to be strong enough to live in the wild and join a herd. Itβs a wonderful initiative!
After this we were off from Nairobi national park and headed to the giraffe park. I had a major laughing bout that Rithvi did not appreciate. As someone who grew up in India, I donβt get ruffled by bumpy roads. My very American daughter is a different story. To avoid a traffic jam, our driver decided to drive off road to overtake so we were basically driving at an angle. Rithvi was so stressed out that the van would fall and while I was reassuring her, another overtook us at high speed! I mean we were already sideways and this other one overtakes us from the left! I was shocked and doubled over in laughter and Rithvi thought I was laughing at her, poor kiddo! The rest of the trip she continued to get scared with all the bumpy game drives and was looking forward to the freeways in US.
The giraffe park was pretty small. We were tired and werenβt in much of a mode to read. We headed straight to feed the giraffes, did a bit of shopping at the gift store and were off. The whole thing may have been 30 mins.
We were done for the day, we had helped ourselves to the picnic sandwiches that were packed the previous day. I canβt remember but I probably ordered in lunch once we got back to our apartment. Mom and I wanted to visit the Masai market again and took an Uber to the mall it was going to be at on that day. unfortunately when we got there, that days Masai market had been canceled and replaced with a luxury apartment expo. Mom and I walked around the mall. I loved the store Kitu Kali, very trendy outfits and shoes, see insta handle @kitukali. Also maakat, denim jacket designs were super cool!

We were originally supposed to go over for dinner at Vatsan uncles house but since he was recovering from mild pneumonia, we postponed it. Had plenty food leftover from lunch and previous day. Mom and Arun uncle got some vegetarian food from the restaurant downstairs. We had an early start the next day at 6:00 am. All of us tried to hit the bed early. My jet lag was still on and I wasnβt getting the best sleep yet.
My dad suggested meeting the kids over summer in Kenya. An old friend of his who had lived in Kenya for decades had been recommending it, especially to witness the animal migration in late July/ early August. I opted in to travel with the kids, just before the kiddos school starts. We were going to be a group of 6 – my parents, me with the two kiddos and a friend of my dad traveling from Southern California. 3 seniors and 2 kids π
I didnβt participate too much in the planning other than asking to limit the trip to no more than 10 days. That said, when the itinerary was finalized it was nice to be able to see it within a travel app that had descriptions of places we would stay, travel times and what we could do. All our bookings were by Ibis Tours and Travels. Our Nairobi stay was booked by us directly. The visa process was impressive. As of Jan 2024, there is no visa to visit Kenya. You fill out an online form to get electronic authorization and in 3 days I was able to add the authorization to my apple wallet.
Got all the recommended vaccinations I.e. yellow fever and malaria pills. I also sprayed all our clothes with a strong mosquito spray. Iβm not sure how much this helped but we were hardly bothered with mosquitos throughout our stay. We probably used the bug spray we carried with us 2-3 times.
Day 0 – our flight was via Qatar with a 1 hr layover in Doha. It is a long flight to Doha. I was worried we would miss our flight to Nairobi but not only did we make it, they waited for others from our SF flight as well, a good 5-10 mins. Both legs of the flight were smooth. Immigration lines in Nairobi not so much. Not that it wasnβt smooth. It was late, we landed at ~12:00 am tired and the lines were long. Not so nice is when large groups of friends decide to stand haphazardly in multiple lines trying to figure out which line is moving faster. Letβs just say, I ended up being among the last few people to exit the airport. And these large groups all had kids much older than mine I.e. older teens. In short, fellow travelers, be considerate of others.
Dad was there to pick us up with our driver. Got to our apartment in Nairobi, a penthouse on the 5th floor and it was spacious beautiful home! Tanush said βI could live hereβ. Very nice 3 bed 3 bath apartment.
Pic of the Shayona living room
Day 1 – today was a rest day and the suggestion was to visit Nairobi National Museum and Masai Market. I connected with dadβs friends daughter Shruti. She had organized a day driver for us. Most of us couldnβt quite sleep late due to the jet lag. We got breakfast at an Indian restaurant that was part of the apartment complex. Breakfast was poha. The chai was amazing.
Side note – Kenya was colonized by the British and they won their freedom in 1963. Many similarities with India in that sense, almost everyone speaks English. Also, as part of railway construction during the British colonial rule, many Indians immigrated. There are 3rd and 4th generation Kenyans of Indian origin. My dadβs friend and his daughters are proud Kenyans. There is Indian influence in day to day Kenyan living. Masala chai is ubiquitous and some of the dishes have Indian spices. Also, there is no restaurant where you donβt get vegetarian food, itβs a default.
Getting back to day 1, our drivers first stop was taking us to Vatsan uncles house. Shruthi added a local SIM to my dadβs phone and we also exchanged USD for Kenyan shillings as well digitally added to the phone. Using βlipa na m-pesaβ you can pay anyone, absolutely anyone with a cell phone number. Ubiquitous like google pay in India.
From there we went to the Nairobi National Museum. Relatively small museum, 2 floors. Lots and lots of school buses with school kids in various school uniforms. we had purchased the tickets from the e-citizen portal. I really enjoyed it, it was small but well done. Especially enjoyed learning about Masai traditional culture. I also found it curious that so many of the school kids were staring at us and would come up and introduce themselves to us. It was really sweet but I also didnβt expect it given the southAsian immigrant population in Nairobi. Shruthi clarified that they were probably out of town school kiddos.
After the museum, we went to junction mall where the days Masai market would be available. The Masai market is located in different malls across the city on different days except Mondays. They usually set up in a parking garage at a mall. We were provided guidance that you must bargain. We got lunch at ArtCaffe that is known for its coffee, the famous Kenyan coffee. I didnβt like the food as much, a lot of western options. After lunch we headed to the Masai market and this was really fun! I absolutely enjoyed looking at the sale and did some shopping of artwork, African themed sweatshirts, beaded bracelets etc. Junction mall also showed me how diverse Nairobi is, people of all colors and races live here.
Tanush got bored at the Masai market and took a shop vendors spot for a bit πA 360 of the entrance at Junction Mall
We headed back to the apartment after our shopping. We were too tired to step out again to get dinner. Shruthi gave me some recommendations and I ordered some Indian food for all of us using the Bolt app (like DoorDash). That evening I also got to meet Shalini, Shruthiβs older sister. They were both so sweet to stop by and drop off sandwiches they had made for our Safari the next day. Their suggestions (1) be mentally prepared to start your day early for game drives (safaris). Animal activity is best very early in the morning (2) be patient and take plenty snacks and water to munch during your game drive. With that they handed us two large boxes of sandwiches and Indian savory snacks. Thatβs a wrap on day 1 and getting mentally prepared to head out to Nairobi national park at 7 am(!)
Had planned a road trip months ago to visit 3 national parks for the kiddos spring break in April – Joshua Tree, Zion & Grand Canyon. It would drive over 4 states – Cali, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Also, since we have a 4th grader we get to have 10 free passes to any national park. We had Rithvi do an online activity and printed out our free passes π₯³ a new thing for our family was to do this road trip with our electric car!
Day 1 – headed out as planned at 6:30 am and charged the car to 80%. Kiddos were pretty much in PJs and we hit the road. Our first stop was Bravos Farms in Kettleman City, CA, to get breakfast & charge the car. Uneventful drive and got there by ~10:00 am. Bravo Farms didnβt really have a breakfast place, got some coffee and a breakfast burrito. Was ok. Had fully charged the car and continued driving. Next stop for lunch was in Mohave, CA. Not much here either, other than supercharge the car and got some fast food type lunch. It was ok, burgers for kiddos & me. Sanjeevβs chicken turned out to be bad. From there it was another ~ 2.5 hr drive to Twentynine palms, CA, our stay for the next 2 days. Reached ~ 4:30 pm. Kiddos watched βavatar 2β over the drive, lol, that is a longgggg movie! Checked in, was a tiring drive. Sanjeev stepped out to super charge the car again, kiddos and me freshened up. Thought we will try to catch the sunset at some recommended spots. Didnβt quite pan out. By the time we drove to Indian cove, the sun had already set. The colors were quite beautiful though – orange purple sky! We then drove to a place for dinner and were surprised to hear it had a 1 hr wait. So we picked another Mexican place, decent food and family friendly place – enchados. We then tried to pick a spot for star gazing, didnβt quite pan out either, lot of light pollution in many places. Tanush rightly pointed out that we had better spots close to our house π. Finally hit the bed and had a good nights rest!
Day 2 – got up & ready by ~ 9:00 am. Based on our research, once we entered Joshua tree park, there was not going to be any place to get lunch in the park. So we decided to first get breakfast at Jellyβs donut. I highly recommend this place, super delicious cream filled donuts and decent coffee (New Orleans Cafe Du Monde!). To our surprise, this also had Vietnamese food for lunch, perfect, packed some dumplings, chicken & rice to take into the park. Went into the visitor center, where the front desk let us know that it would be crowded today and to park where available and look around the spot there, they really couldnβt make recommendations. That was a good heads up. As soon as we entered, we got lucky and found the parking spot at the first place we wanted to go i.e. split rock. we did a pretty decent hike at this spot, a couple hours. I lost Tanush for a bit π classic βI didnβt see mommy so I went to find daddyβ. Kids were getting cranky toward the end of it aka constant βI think we are lost!β π finally completed the loop, got a nice spot for a picnic lunch! It was perfect. During this trip, Rithvi kept making us giggle with her peppa pig – Dr. hamster accent, specifically the line βyou have a very healthy fish, sheβs lovelyβ. She does it really well π€£ so we tripped up even more when a Brit family arrived at the spot looking amazed and R says βI canβt wait to hear them say itβs lovelyβ π these family trips really help you catch up to how your kids are growing up! After lunch we didnβt find parking at the next couple points we wanted to, but that was ok. The hike had really helped. We did stop and take a few pics at skull rock, it was pretty cool. We did the all wheel drive self guided tour on the dirt road talking about the landscape. That was cool. Then we drove to βkeys viewβ. Such microclimates, this point was completely covered in fog! We then decided to drive back & go south to βcholla cactus gardenβ. It was around 4/5 pm. It was beautiful, figured weβd stay here to watch sunset, even though it was a bit cloudy. Of course, R had to use the restroom which was a good 20 min drive away. Anyway, we had plenty of time for sunset. Sunset was ok, got to see the colors diffused behind the clouds. Started to head back and exit the park. This time we had a reservation the dinner place we couldnβt go to the previous day. I highly recommend this place βkitchen in the desertβ, really nice food & music. We had a short wait, we were seated inside near the bar. They were definitely popular & packed! Food took a little long to come, but was yum! Canβt remember what I got, just that drinks and food were both good! Didnβt plan on any star gazing and hit the bed relatively early.
Day 3 – this was our drive to Zion national park, ~ 6.5 hrs drive. We loved jellyβs donut, so decided to pack donuts and coffee and hit the road. Drive was nice. What surprised was the dense patches of Joshua trees outside the park π why do they have a park when thereβs Joshua trees all over the place! π€·ββοΈ pushed on the remaining charge and got to Las Vegas for lunch! It was a mall and we got lunch at a food court. Pretty decent Malaysian and Mexican food. Charged the car and then drove to Zion. Kiddos watched βdamselβ on the way. It was interesting that (spoiler ahead) before the prince throws the damsel down the cave, Rithvi commented exactly that i.e. βI think heβs going to throw her downβ. So when it happened Tanush was shocked and remarked βhow did you know?!β π I thought βI think my daughter is going to be okβ π
One thing we missed is that there were no superchargers in Springdale, UT, our stay for the next 2 days. So when we got there, we were low on charge and no superchargers nearby. We would have to drive back 30 mins to supercharge and we didnβt have enough charge to do that either π₯ we checked in at to our hotel, and Sanjeev drove around looking for regular EV charger, which was turning out to be harder than we thought. Kiddos & I rested &freshened up for dinner. We went to Cafe Memeβs, I highly recommend this place too. Regular American food but yummy! We luckily got a table quickly, and were figuring out our car charging strategy π. Couldnβt come up with anything ingenious and Sanjeev found a spot attached to a hotel and was sleeping in the car until 1:00 am. π€¦πΎββοΈ lesson learned – donβt assume super chargers are ubiquitous and plan ahead! Needless to say neither Sanjeev or I slept very well, kiddos did fine.
Day 4 – lot of lessons learned on this day π was good and not so good day! Kicked off the day with complimentary breakfast from our inn, nice place – attached to bumbleberry inn. Had a decent breakfast. We were informed that you canβt really drive your car inside, it will be with a shuttle bus. It was also one of the most crowded days. We took a short bus ride, 5 mins from our inn to visitor center. From there it took 2 hours to board the shuttle bus for the scenic drive!! Insane. This is probably where I must have picked up a bug, got a cold/cough and head ache that I managed for the rest of the trip π€¦πΎββοΈ we entered the park ~ 12:30 pm π’ it was standing room only on the shuttle bus, so not like we could enjoy the scenery on the bus drive. Took the bus to the last stop in the park. Did a short hike along the river. Zion is majestic! Massive mountains with a beautiful river flowing. Didnβt do βthe narrowsβ where you can walk through the river. Sanjeev & Tanush want to come back for that! We then took the shuttle back to the only place that has lunch inside the park. Food was nothing remarkable, was quick enough and not too painful of a line. The eating spot had a large meadow with a view of the mountains, def a nice spot to enjoy lunch. We then did a relatively easy hike to another point. Unfortunately there were a few closures so we had to do a moderate level hike, that I usually avoid. This turned out pretty strenuous for me. Stunning views though! Lesson learned – pace yourself and skip if you canβt. The tiredness I got after this didnβt fully go away for the remainder of the trip. Another lesson learned – your kids have way more energy than you! π I was still in the βsurely R canβt do this!β;when she remarked βthis is so easy, why are you so slow mommy!β After this hike, rested for a bit and took the shuttle to exit the park. I pretty much had a limp by this point. Sanjeev and the kiddos decided to walk back to the inn and I took the shuttle to nearest stop for our inn. Helped to rest for a bit. Kiddos discovered βsock fightβ and entertained themselves. We then planned to charge our car at the park and do an easy hike to watch the sunset. This was nice, paved and easy hike. Lovely view of the sunset. After this, not a good decision – I said we walk to dinner place aka βspotted dogβ. Further strain on my leg with that walk, wish i had picked something closer. Food and drinks were so-so at this place. Rithvi claims that family next to our table was Olivia Rodrigo and her family π€¦πΎββοΈπ . Thankfully Sanjeev offered to walk back and pick up the car and we drove back to the inn. We were all super tired and got good sleep.
Day 5 – by this day, I had body ache, cold, sore throat and headache. Everyone else was still ok. It was our drive to Grand Canyon. got a good complimentary breakfast again at our Inn and headed out. It was going to be 5.5 hrs drive. I didnβt drive, put a blanket and slept through the drive. We stopped at Page, AZ to pick up lunch – fried chicken. Nobody was hungry other than me. Kiddos ate a little over the drive. Reached Grand Canyon ~ 4 pm. Got to see a nice view, stood in line to get a tower view but abandoned it when the wait increased. Drove over to our lodge in the park. There was no supercharger here, but Tesla designated chargers near our room. So that was good and got the spot easily throughout our trip. π checked in and rested. Drove over to Mather point for sunset view. Was beautiful. Easy parking and walk. Sanjeev and kiddos had the fried chicken I had packed for lunch for dinner instead. Portion sizes are so huge that they are usually good for 2 meals. We went to the tavern close to the lodge and I got an elk chili. Was ok, a bit sweetish. Rested for the night, no car charge anxiety this time.
Day 6 – Sanjeev and Tanush enthusiastically got up before sunrise to catch it at Mather point. I enjoyed looking at the pic later π Tanush got back and slept for a couple more hours, Sanjeev did his morning run. We got a meh breakfast at the cafe nearby. Got parking easily at the visitor center. Did a flat paved 2 mile hike from Mather point along the west rim to el Tovar hotel. Was long & tiring for me, walked slowly. I enjoyed the self guided tour and the yavapai geology museum! The tour has been done very well and the info points with geological timeline is done really well. Develop a deep appreciation for our planet! We got lucky for lunch and got a table at El Tovar hotel. 5 mins later folks were getting turned away. Food was pretty good here! I had a Navajo taco, basically the base is fry bread! Yum π after lunch we walked around Hopi House, reminds you of the houses in rural India β€οΈ took the shuttle back to our car. Since the lodge stop was earlier, me and the kiddos got off earlier and Sanjeev continued to the visitor center to pick up the car. I walked to the grocery nearby to pick up some items while kiddos continued to our room. I was happy to find Vicks! After Sanjeev got back we decided to drive to few more scenic points. I was not happy when I learned we have to park our car and take a shuttle. Oh well! Tanush complained of headache & queasiness around this time but we continued. He unfortunately fell very sick at the first scenic point and pretty much had a really rough time for the remainder of that evening. We took the shuttle back, he got to have a good 2 hr sleep. Unfortunately we had pizza for dinner, that made his stomach worse and he threw up multiple times that night. It was horrible. Sanjeev headed out at 11 pm to find medicine but everything was closed around us. The front desk was helpful and gave us some medicines and the vending machines also had Gatorade. We got lucky. Multiple lessons learned – careful what you eat, especially when sick and check with your hotel first. The three of us barely slept that night, R thankfully slept through most of it. Needless to say we were pretty nervous about our drive the next day.
Day 7 – Tanush woke up pretty tired and not himself. It was checkout day and our drive to Las Vegas. We had bagels and cream cheese that i had picked from the grocery. Headed out ~ 9:30 am. Tanush skipped eating anything heavy for the majority of the day. He sat in the front seat of the car and managed his nausea with rolling the windows down. Poor kiddo. Have no idea what caused his stomach bug. Thankfully he didnβt have any more throw up episodes on our drive. Stopped for lunch at a super charger and had subway sandwiches. Tanush stuck to 1 banana. Around ~ 3 pm we were close to Hoover dam. Made an impromptu stop here. Walked the bridge and I was surprised Tanush agreed to do the tour. Rithvi was having none of it, so I (gladly) sat back in the car with her. Looks like the tiredness caught up with her too. Sanjeev and Tanush did the tour where they get to see the internals and they got coffee on the way back. It was ok. Reached Las Vegas ~5:30 pm and kiddos were happy to just chill with Netflix π we had 8:15 dinner reservations at Chica in Venetian. we headed out of the hotel ~7:15 with Uber and got dropped at Bellagio. R was a bit cranky and was not sure why we didnβt get dropped at our dinner place. She wasnβt impressed with any of the lights and also remarked that she wasnβt happy when some random lady put her hand on daddyβs shoulder and asked if he wanted a pic with her πππ Tanush was feeling a lot better by now and he too was meh with all the lights and glitz. He remarked βitβs all very brightβ. R perked up a bit once we were inside the Venetian. She loved a bath by place that had them in the shape of ice creams and donuts π we got to our dinner place just in time. I absolutely loved the food here! Soooo good! There was also a dance around the dining area where the dancers interact with the guests. One of the dancers asked if R would like to join but she declined π Tanush did pretty ok, he was careful about his portions but tried a few safe items like hummus and guacamole. Took another Uber back to our hotel, so glad we took Uber. It is so confusing driving around the strip. Got a good night rest, no incidents this time! π
Day 8 – we had a complimentary breakfast but hardly an appetite for it. That said, we had a hearty breakfast, R did pretty good. Tanush was still cautious and staying on the low portion size and had a toast. It was drive back home day!! Largely uneventful. Stopped at the super charger place that had a grocery store. Picked up chicken wings and conchaβs for lunch. Ate during the drive. Thankfully I was feeling a little better to help with the driving and did one leg of it. Stopped once more for charging at the Tesla Lounge in kettleman city. Finished our drive with picking up South Indian food – idlis and dosas for dinner close to home!! Reached home sweet home at 9 pm! Phew! We made it.
So many lessons learned but such a precious family time. Grateful for what we have! Kudos to both the kiddos, they were troopers and of course hubby for doing the bulk of the driving π
Peace, love and liberation for all. Palestine and Sudan were not far from my mind π and a reminder of how fleeting everything can be ππ’ I try to be mindful of my privilege when there are live stream genocides happening and little children being starved.
Day 1 – flight at 10:20 pm, left ~7pm, took BART, at checkin realized we are the only bright sparks to think we could show our home test result as proof of being Covid negative. Sanjeev thankfully suggested letting us fly until Florida and we could get get tested there. Everything worked out thankfully and we landed in Jamaica per the itinerary!!
At Jamaica Airport
Customs was smooth and we met our amazing travel coach and driver Shakeera at the airport. She would drive us around for the next couple days helping us with planning on what to do. We were so lucky to run into her and have her drop us to the hotel on day 1.
Checked in to our hotel, The Spanish Court Hotel. Rested for a bit and got a late lunch (4 pm π) at the restaurant in the hotel. yummy cocktails and a Jamaican platter.
Jamaican platter – with Bammy (made from Casava)
Tummies stuffed, walked to Emancipation Park from the hotel. Very nice park, lots of folks going for a jog, run, walk, playing TT. Took a walk around, sat and people watched for a bit.
Emancipation Park
Then took a cab to the well known βDevonβs I screamβ. Cab driver who took us there must have thought he was James Bond or something. Anyway, we reached. Same vibe like the park and it was Friday evening. Lots of families out enjoying ice cream in the pleasant weather – warm and breezy. Ice cream was US style sizes, I.e. too much. Got a scoop of rum & raisins with pistachio. Canβt go wrong with chocolate syrup and peanuts for toppings. Couldnβt finish it. Getting a cab here back to the hotel was tricky, thankfully got one after a bit of a walk and reached the hotel safely.
Pandemic Note – Throughout the trip everyone was good about keeping their masks on, there were billboards everywhere related to staying safe in the pandemic and every shop/store reminded you to sanitize your hands when you enter. Explains why they are doing as well as they are during the pandemic. That said, tourism has definitely been hit for the last 2 years.
Day 2 – the previous evening we had texted Shakeera some places in Ochi (as itβs referred to by locals for Ochos Rios) we were interested in and she had agreed to plan the order and drive us around. First stop was Iris Blue Hole. The drive took almost 3 hrs (should have been 1.5 hrs) – bad roads and Shakeera not too sure about the place too. The place was amazing!! Not yet too touristy, mainly locals. First was jumping off a small cliff into the water, next a small hike to secret falls and jumping off into the water there too – it was so thrilling and refreshing. Plenty vendors for ganja products around. Too bad we werenβt that adventurous π.
At Iris Blue Hole
Next stop was mystic mountain. I thought it was a hike but nobody knew the hike and pointed to the commercial park offering rides, ziplining etc. Sanjeev and I were famished. Took the sky tour to get to the top of the mountain and got some good lunch with a fab view. Sanjeev had jerk chicken and me whole fried fish. After lunch, tried some rock climbing lol. Then off to ziplining – super super fun. Thrilling, scary and awesome! After that it was closing time for park. Took the sky tour back to the base of the mountain.
After that we had dinner at Summerhouse, a former plantation home turned restaurant. Good food (lamb kofta) and cocktails and finished off with bread pudding with rum frosting.
Day 3 – Sunday was a late start, Shakeera had told us she could help after her Sunday church was done. Hung out at the hotel pool cabana. Sanjeev and I headed out on our own to βuncorked tooβ a restaurant recommended by front desk folks. Was nice, got some salad and salmon.
Shakeera caught up with us there and we started driving to Hollywell park (her recommendation). Super curvy roads and really appreciated how safe and comfortable she made the ride. Stopped for some coconut water on the way, very fresh and yum. At Hollywell park we did a couple hikes, beautiful beautiful foliage everywhere! Loved the hikes.
Wrapped up and then Shakeera drove us to strawberry hill, a hotel/restaurant/spa by former manager of Bob Marley. We later found out, this is THE place to go, at least by locals. Loved the place, the views!! Had a wonderful dinner and Shakeera had us back to our hotel by ~8:30 pm.
Day 4 – our last full day and Shakeera had recommended the bob marley museum. Hung out at the cabana for a bit and then headed out to the museum. Beautiful home converted to a museum, beautiful personality that Marley was. Teared up listening to his story and life message.
After the tour, it was off to Devonβs for lunch, at Reggae Mill Bar. Decent lunch but had to rush back for a scheduled spa appointment. Got a much needed full body massage! Sanjeev followed later after shopping at Devonβs for souvenirs and gifts. He got the hot stone massage. After our massages, time for covid test – moment of truth to know if we would be able to enter the US or no. Thankfully all good! Got our proof and all set!
Decided to spend the rest of the evening in the pool cabana and order dinner and cocktails while we relaxed in the water! Such bliss! Loved our evening, the cocktails and food!!
Day 5 – breakfast at the hotel on all the days was amazing, every morning there was some or the other stew that I would have with a side of fruits and coffee. Last day was no different with chicken stew! We would sit on the terrace, enjoying the weather with our coffees.
After breakfast, it was pretty much pack up, checkout, Shakeeraβs driver took us over to the airport. After a brief panic on why our flight reservation wasnβt coming up, it was all good and the rest of our way back was non eventful.
I canβt quite believe we did this trip! I was so nervous about doing it given the omicron situation. I felt like we were nuts traveling not only by flight, but all the way across the country and into a foreign country!! Jamaica could not have been a better experience and so badly needed for both of us!! Talked to kids every evening (itβs the same as eastern time) and could tell they missed us. Typing this on the flight from Florida back to Cali. Canβt wait to see the kiddos in the morning and give them a tight hug! Iβm sure 5 min in there will be something to yell at them about π
Planned to celebrate Rithvi’s 4th birthday at Aulani, a Disney resort in Oahu. Flew out on Tuesday Feb 6th 9am and back on Saturday feb 10th 9:30pm. Flight was smooth, everyone excited π.
This is our 2nd trip to Oahu. The last time was when R was 8 months old and T was 3. In retrospect I can appreciate how much more easier this trip was. I didn’t of course appreciate that when I was there (of course). R spilled juice on herself on the airplane but other than that uneventful. R watched boss baby back to back and T had a field day watching movies back to back. Will there be a Day when passenger airplanes have bigger restrooms for parents of babies & little kids?
After we landed ~2:30pm, picked up our rental car and headed out to get some lunch. We now know not to expect to find anything decent near the Honolulu airport. Mainly industrial area with plenty of hole in the wall places. Picked a Thai place, food was ok. We then headed straight to the resort and kids super excited to get on ‘lazy river’. A long stretch of gently flowing water you can go on a tube. We loved it!
we then moved to hang out at the infinity pool and as it got cooler in the evening, kids loved the hot tub/jacuzzi.
our room was decent, had a partial island and ocean view.
wrapped up the 1st day with shower and dinner and snoozed by 9pm. On most days kids were so tired from playing in the water that they would struggle to stay awake for their dinner and sometimes skip and sleep through it all. Had dinner with live music, good appetizers and drinks. Sanjeev did some light groceries so we could do breakfast in the room through our trip.
the next day was just hanging out at the resort and let kids play as much as they want in water. We hit the beach first (private beach of the resort), Rithvi too focused playing in the sand and Tanush loving the sand and water.
then went back to the pool followed by lunch. We tried to convince both kids to go to “Aunty’s beach house’, a place that kids can be dropped off and they apparently love. Not so lucky with our kids but they finally relented. They liked it there but needed to be convinced every time to hang out there. Rithvi watched a movie in princess dress up clothes.
In the evening Tanush hit the beach again while Sanjeev got some amazing pics. Rithvi couldn’t make up her mind and kept going from jacuzzi to pool & back.
Routine same as previous day, shower & dinner at another restaurant on the resort. All of us were exhausted, especially kids
the next day was Rithvi’s birthday & we were greeted with a rainbow in the morning.
The plan was to drive to the Polynesian cultural center the whole day, it would end with luau and show. The kids spent the morning at Aunty’s beach house while I packed.
Aulani is on the south tip of the island and we needed to drive an hour to the north tip of the island. We loved the drive, along the coast.
reached the Polynesian center around 11:40am. It’s basically a large campus where you learn the culture of many Polynesian islands including Hawaii, like Samoa, aeterroa (part of New Zealand), Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga etc. each island has a show, activities that you can participate in. There is a canoe pageant show at 2:30pm that is quite popular.
Us watching the welcome show at Samoa center
T helping with making a Samoan raw banana & coconut milk dessert
Rithvi & Tanush learning how to start fire the Samoan way
Me showing off my Aetorroan tattoo
Rithvi & I at the canoe pageant show, she has an arm tattoo too
Rithvi was absolutely mesmerized by the Hawaiian drums
Dad & kids learning the Hawaiian dance
We had the luau (dinner & dance) scheduled at 4:30pm. Headed off there after getting Rithvi to wear something special. Pic at the entrance of the dinner area
Dinner was a buffet and the dances & songs were very nice. Kids enjoyed though Rithvi asked why she wasn’t getting any gifts for her birthday. π Sanjeev & I volunteered with others to dance on stage. Sanjeev was made bakra & asked to dance solo after all of us. He ended up very popular and lots of people complimented him after ππ
After dinner we did a canoe ride, hung out at some more island areas, watched a short movie about Hawaii & then headed for the 1 hour show @ 7:30pm. Kids were super tired & Rithvi slept when the show started.
Reached the resort at 10:30pm, very fun and tiring day. Skipping all the ‘fun’ we had working through logistics of carting kids from one place to another, restroom breaks and accidents π still better than 3 years ago.
The next day was our last full day at the resort, the plan was to take it easy and let them be. To summarize, learned to play the ukulele as a family, R got pics with Moana, T with Mickey and Minnie, lunch followed by shaved ice.
Got to be a part of a pool party, quite fun. It was a challenge getting Rithvi out of the water on this day & she really tested my patience.
Did an early dinner at 5:30pm, the restaurant was ocean facing and I loved our last meal, the drinks, appetizers and dessert. Sanjeev got do more amazing photography and we definitely have fond memories of our trip.
Pics of our drinks & desserts
Pics of our view enjoying the sunset while we ate
The next day flight was at 2:30pm, Tanush hung out at Aunty’s beach house learning the dance again. Flight back was smooth, a tad delayed but not too bad
